To A Daughter
February 23, 2008
A daughter is so like a song.
A melody, now sharp, now flat
With counterpoint of this and that.
All filled with laughs and lemon drops.
But woven in are minor notes,
The tears, the sighs, the lumpy throats.
Not long ago I held a child
And crooned soft lullabies.
And in a mother’s heart
That echo never dies.
But, suddenly, in a day it seems
The busy child is filled with dreams.
With slender form and gentle brow
A woman stands before me now.
Your courage and your faith are strong.
And though the road is sometimes long,
And filled with doubts and restless fears,
Your light will shine through all the years.
God bless you daughter mine,
And wrap you round in angel shine.
May the gift of love abide with you.
And the light of wisdom see you through.
